By Philip Mwakio and Reuters Tourism minister Najib Balala has asked tourism players to catch up with the latest trends in the industry.Balala told a meeting of the Mombasa and Coast Tourism Association (MCTA) that local tourism trends were not at par with the rest of the world."The Kenyan tourism industry is yet to catch up with modern trends. The industry needs to change. We have not seen lots of improvement in the industry,'' he said.Balala said he would treat tourism as a business initiative and challenged the private sector to continue playing a proactive role in the industry, adding the Government was only a facilitator.The minister said Sh1.6 billion had been set aside for recovery programmes, but more money was needed.MCTA chairman Mr Kuldip Sondhi, welcomed this year's Budget and urged the minister to ensure the Kenya Tourism Board had more private sector representation."We need more say in this body that is the country's tourism marketer. The private sector needs to be in the driving seat, making key decisions and monitoring expenditure,'' said Sondhi.He went on to add that for an effective recovery plan, more charter flights from Kenyan tourist source market are required.He said that to be able to fill up the 32,000 plus beds in star rated hotels at the Coast, the destination would require at least 30 charters a week to be landing at the Moi International Airport.There are currently three or four charter flights landing at the airport weekly.Sondhi said that by July 1, the number is expected to increase to nine."November will be the start of the next tourist high season and already indications are that there will be thirteen charters per week,'' he said.Meanwhile, Australia is using a move starring Oscar-winners Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman to spearhead a new tourism campaign designed to lure more visitors.Titled "Australia" and directed by flamboyant home-grown director Baz Luhrmann, the A$130 million ($122 million) film follows an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a sprawling property and falls in love with a rugged drover.With sweeping Outback scenery and set in northern Australia on the eve of World War Two, "Australia" will see Kidman and Jackman take 2,000 cattle overland and caught in the wartime bombing of Darwin by the Japanese. "This movie will potentially be seen by tens of millions of people and it will bring to life little-known aspects of Australia's history," Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson said.
