He was working late on a special assignment and wanted a cigarette. He told a colleague that he'd be right back and, leaving his jacket behind, headed downstairs. Thus commenced the longest smoke break of Nicholas White's life, a harrowing experience that began at around eleven o'clock on a Friday night in October, 1999.The Business Week offices were located on the forty-third floor of the McGraw-Hill Building in mid-town Manhattan. When White finished his cigarette, he returned to the lobby, got into Car No. 30 and pressed the button marked 43. The car accelerated. It was an express elevator, with no stops below the thirty-ninth floor, and the building was deserted. But after a moment, White felt a jolt. As aired on yesterday 6/2/2008 on KDLT/NBC News 46 yesterday at 6:00PM & 10:00PM there is a new website that uses social networking with a dedicated aim to empower the people to solve our own problems. The site gives Americans a tool with which to solve crisis that affects us all and becomes a way to educate our government and others to do a better job for the people of this country. The site allows some people to define a problem in our country or initiate ideas and even others to cultivate those ideas into simple solutions that will ultimately solve our problems. With everyone engaged in the solution there is better chance of support to make it happen. The home page reflects a united effort by the people to understand the oil crisis, and then it includes a solution that will literally solve almost 80% of the current problems we have right now from the recession, falling dollars value, poor corporate stock performance, rising unemployment, lost jobs to overseas companies, etc. The solution will undo high gas prices forever based on the way the free markets and futures markets work by design. Barack Obama, John McCain, Joseph Lieberman, Larry King and James Carville react to the news of Tim Russert's death.Tim Russert, a political lifer who made a TV career of his passion with unrelenting questioning of the powerful and influential, died suddenly Friday in the midst of a presidential campaign he'd covered with trademark intensity. Praise poured in from the biggest names in politics, some recalling their own meltdown moments on his hot seat. Russert, 58, was a political operative before he was a journalist. He joined NBC a quarter century ago and ended up as the longest-tenured host of the Sunday talk show "Meet the Press."He was an election-night fixture, with his whiteboard and scribbled figures, and was moderator for numerous political debates. He wrote two best-selling books, including the much-loved "Big Russ and Me" about his relationship with his father.He was NBC's Washington bureau chief.President Bush, informed of Russert's death while at dinner in Paris, saluted him as "a tough and hardworking newsman. He was always well-informed and thorough in his interviews.
